Accommodation for the independent, free-spirited tourist. Whether you want to spend time swimming and snorkelling (the marine life here is exquisite), or exploring deserted palm-fringed beaches, or enjoying the life of a small village community, or just relaxing in an atmosphere of total peace and tranquillity, Blue Planet is the place for you. We have accommodation in Havelock, the most popular destination in the Andaman Islands, and in the more remote and secluded Long Island.
There are 572 islands in the Andaman Islands, only 96 of them inhabited, and 90% of the land area is forested. There are many native and indigenous trees and plants. However, many tourists visit for the exceptional marine life, to see the coral, swim, snorkel or go scuba diving, and to enjoy the many beautiful, deserted beaches which have so far resisted any major tourist development.
For keen divers, the Andaman Islands are a world-class destination, and the area around Havelock and Long Island offers superb diving with great potential for exploration: check out DiveIndia on www.diveindia.com to find out about their "dive safaris" to North Andaman, which include staying at Blue Planet! For those of us who are more land-based, there is so much to do and to explore. In Havelock you can visit beaches 1 to 6 as well as the spectacular Radhanagar Beach (voted Asia’s No.1 beach by Time Magazine). You can take a boat trip through the mangroves to Elephant Beach, hire a motorbike or bicycle to explore the island’s lush interior, or go shopping in No.3 village.
In Long Island there are walks through pristine forest, or along the shore. The village itself is a delightful place to spend time: you can shop in the local bazaar, or sit by the sea watching the sunset, or join in a game of cricket on the "village green"! The island is an excellent place for bird watching, and you can go on day trips to neighbouring islands by public or private boat.
Depending on the Forestry Department’s position regarding permission for camping, we can even take you by boat to North Passage Island or Lalaji Bay for a real "get away from it all" experience, and we will provide tents, comfortable mattresses and bedding, and cooking equipment. You don't have to "rough it": if you want we can even send a cook with you!
Long Island is well off the beaten track as far as tourism is concerned, and is like visiting an older India which has long disappeared from many places. There are no tourist shops or tourist prices, and you get around mostly on foot as there are no cars, rickshaws or buses on the island. What you will find there is a magical, peaceful place which is difficult to compare with anywhere else, even on the Andaman Islands.
