A little off the beaten track, and not on most tourist maps, Long Island is nevertheless easy to get to by boat from Port Blair, either directly or "island hopping" via Neil Island and Havelock. Alternatively you can get to it from Rangat in North Andaman via a short boat trip: Rangat is easily reached by road from Port Blair.
We would recommend a stay at our place as part of your exploratory tour of the different islands combined with a visit to North Andaman: we are happy to advise you about itineraries. We can also take you on a visit to uninhabited islands!
Long Island has a community of about 600 people, most of them resettled from mainland India: the main languages are Hindi, Bengali and Tamil, and the main religions are Christian, Hindu and Muslim, but there is no religious or ethnic tension on the island and all religious festivals are times of great joy when all the community participate. There are temples, a mosque and a church. There is a medical centre, a school, and a police station, and shops for everyday supplies.
The island is approximately 10km from North to South, 5km from East to West, much of it forested. The walk to Lalaji Bay on the North of the island takes up to 2 hours.
There are no motor cars on the island, and no roads: free of traffic or crime, the island is a perfect destination for families. Generally, people walk or use bicycles, and we will meet you from the boat to help with any luggage! |
